Education: Tamaki Primary Auckland, Windsor Primary Invercargill, back to Auckland to Manuka and Glenfield primaries, North cote Intermediate, Glenfield College.

Family: Wife Alison (married 1994), adult son by previous relationship.

Interests: Music (‘‘music is my work and play’’), acquiring vinyl records (‘‘the collection’ huge, diverse’’), recently restored vintage stereo, president BOP Blues Club and Rotorua Blues Festival Trust, plays regularly at Belgium Bar’s jam nights. Bush croquet, golf. Plays off a 16 handicap at Lake View which circumvents in a golf cart (‘‘walking can ruin a perfectly good game of golf; with the cart I can focus on the game more’’). Former president Rotary Club of Rotorua Sunrise, foundation member Wingspan (‘‘I’ve always loved birds’’)

Favorite music: ‘‘I don’t really have a favorite, but I do like listening to music that’s a good production. Music’s a universal language, it crosses all ethnic, cultural and spiritual boundaries. I learned that in China’’

On karaoke: ‘‘It’s really brought music to people who would never otherwise have had the opportunity to sing’’

On the tone deaf: ‘‘I feel dread fully sorry for them’’.
